Yaroslavl. Church of the Epiphany

Five green domes crown red brick in Yaroslavl. Church of the Epiphany shows Nicholas Roerich standing before one of the Volga towns most richly tiled parish buildings. Glazed cupolas the colour of bottle glass carry gilt crosses against a pale sky, while whitewashed window surrounds and patterned masonry break the facade into ordered bands. The tempera surface sits matte and grainy, short crosshatched strokes laid over grey underpaint, cobalt shadow cooling the foreground. It belongs in a study or on a stairway landing, where light falls soft and indirect, the deep dome colour resting quietly against plaster or wood.
