Yard with a horse

A bay horse stands mid-yard, one hind hoof cocked, head lowered toward a water trough. Pyotr Konchalovsky renders the animal in loaded, sculptural brushwork that gives its barrel real mass. Around it, everything reads as texture: a sun-bleached timber shed, a whitewashed wall flaking to grey, fence rails crosshatched in umber. Ochre ground shows through everywhere, and the shadow beneath the belly pools in cool violet-grey rather than black. Hens scratch between the wheel ruts. It belongs where work gets done: a study, a hallway by the back door, a kitchen with scarred tables. Rural subjects reward rooms that already carry some honest wear.
