Yard

A walled farmyard fills the frame, its low buildings shouldered against the sky. Nicholas Roerich called the scene simply Yard, and every timber fence and snow-patched roof is drawn with that same blunt economy. Frost blue settles over the courtyards while the walls themselves hold a dusty ochre, painted in flat, tempera-like planes that leave the shadows cold and unhurried. Smoke thins from a chimney. No figure moves; the peasant steadiness of the place does the work instead. Hung in a hallway or above a writing desk, it quiets a room and gives the eye somewhere wintry to rest.
