Wotan and Brunhilde

Wotan looms over the sleeping Brunhilde in this drawing by Koloman Moser, the god wrapped in a mantle of sweeping linear folds, his spear angled across the composition like a verdict. Moser builds the scene almost entirely from contour: dense parallel strokes model the gods beard and armor, while Brunhilde lies small and pale beneath him, her shield beside her on the ground. Deep charcoal and smoky grey dominate, broken by a single warm ochre in the horizon glow behind the figures. Norse myth rendered with the discipline of the Vienna Secession. It belongs in a study or library, above a reading chair.
