Woods Near Eure River

Deep greens and umber trunks fill the canvas as the Eure glints through a gap in the trees. Gustave Loiseau found this stretch of woodland quiet and painted it straight, without ceremony. His brushwork stays loose and searching, trunks built from quick vertical strokes in olive, moss and bark brown. Undergrowth scumbles into shadow at the roots while pale sky flickers between branches, broken into small touches the way he learned from the Post Impressionists. Dappled light shifts across the riverbank, half concealed, half revealed. Suited to a study or reading room where the light is soft and the company is books.
