Woods

Trees crowd the picture from edge to edge, their trunks slanting at odd, insistent angles. Woods by Harry Phelan Gibb treats a stand of forest as pure structure, every branch load bearing. Gibb pushes color toward olive and deep viridian, letting ochre flicker through the undergrowth where light breaks apart. Foliage is built in short, blocky strokes rather than detail, so the canopy reads as weight, not leaf. The ground plane tilts, Cezanne style, pulling the viewer uphill into the trees. Nothing in the composition sits still. Suited to a reading nook or study where the green depth of it rewards long looking.
