Woods at Mimizan

Pine trunks rise in cool verticals through a Landes forest, the title Woods at Mimizan capturing Churchill painting among the tall resin-scented groves of the French coast. Bands of slate and moss green cross the ground while gold light breaks between the stems, thrown down in loose, loaded strokes. Shadows rake diagonally across the sandy floor, and the canopy above stays a dense, near-black mass against a thin strip of sky. The brushwork is quick and confident, more suggestion than detail, exactly the method of a painter working outdoors against the clock.
