Wooded Water near Blenheim

Water threads through a screen of trees in Wooded Water near Blenheim, a landscape by Winston Churchill. The parkland he knew from childhood fills the surface, leaves broken into quick, loaded strokes of green over moving reflections. Boughs arch at the top edge, their foliage worked in layered sap green and olive, while the water below carries pale sky in short horizontal pulls of the brush. Trunks stand as darker verticals, and shadow pools where the bank cuts the current. The handling is direct, painterly, the kind made outdoors in one sitting. It suits a library or panelled study, somewhere with leather chairs and afternoon light, where a quiet stretch of English woodland earns a long look.
