Woman and Cow

Woman and cow fold into one arrangement of flat color in this composition by Bart van der Leck, the milkmaid and the animal cut from the same planes and a single contour. Red wedges build the flank of the cow, blue and yellow bands carry the bent figure, and every edge locks into black line against an open white ground. Nothing shades, nothing models. The scene reads as pure planar construction, closer to stained glass leadwork than to pastoral painting. A stair landing or a dining room with plain surfaces suits its De Stijl discipline, since the design wants white space and nothing nearby that competes.
