Snow settles over the Karwendel peaks above Mittenwald as dusk comes on. This winter scene by Rudolf Reschreiter holds the quiet minute when a Bavarian mountain village turns violet and the last light leaves the snowfields. Gabled rooftops and dark spruce stand half buried in white, while the sky cools from amber at the horizon into blue shadow overhead. Reschreiter paints the drifts with soft impasto strokes, letting the pigment sit thick where snow gathers on fence posts and window ledges, the whole village glowing faintly against the encroaching evening.
