Winterlandschaft

Snow lies thick across the field, and the village roofs beyond carry their white load like a second layer of plaster. Winterlandschaft by Cuno Amiet captures that Swiss stillness where cold light turns everything to blue and pearl. The brushwork is loose and deliberate, patches of violet shadow running between bare trunks, a sky washed thin at the horizon. Small dark figures, if you can call them that, anchor the middle distance with a stroke of umber. Amiet, the Oschwand master, painted winter the way he painted orchards: quickly, honestly, with color doing the work of air. Hang it in a reading nook or a stairway landing where quiet can settle around it.
