Winter Sunshine, Chartwell

Bare trees throw long shadows across the lawn at Chartwell, low winter sun gilding the grass in pale yellow and cold violet. Winston Churchill painted his Kent home again and again, and here the estate rests under a bright, bracing sky. The brushwork moves quickly and openly, oil laid in thick short strokes that catch the light on the lawn and darken toward the tree line. The palette runs gold, umber, and slate, with the white of bare branches cutting clean diagonals through the middle ground.
