A village church huddles under deep snow, its dark roof and pale dome the only verticals in a field of white. Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky paints the Russian countryside at its stillest hour. Brushwork carries the scene: loaded strokes of zinc white and cool grey build the drifts, while touches of violet shadow cool the snow where it curves.
