Winter Landscape

Snow bends every branch along a frozen field in Winter Landscape, Stefan Popescu distilling the Romanian countryside into grays, pale violets, and one dark line of trees. Lead white goes on thick, dragged in short strokes so the drifts hold real texture. Shadows run lavender and slate. A path of trodden ochre brown threads from the foreground toward those trees, their trunks scratched in with the butt end of the brush. It belongs in a quiet study or a pale-walled hallway, anywhere a cold, hushed horizon can balance a warm room during the long months.
