Winter Landscape

Snowfields stretch white under a pale, cold sky in this winter landscape by Nicholas Roerich. The Russian master treats frozen ground as terrain of the spirit, quiet and immense. Broad planes of blue-white pigment carry the drifts, their brushwork long and horizontal like wind across crust. Distant hills deepen toward cobalt and violet at the horizon, while thin tree forms stand dark against the snowline. Roerich builds depth through temperature alone, each layer colder than the last.
