Winter Landscape

Bare trees cross a frozen field under a pale sky in this Winter landscape by Istvan Nagy. The Hungarian painter built the scene in short, loaded brushstrokes, cold whites pressed against umber and ash grey ground. Snow holds in shallow drifts along a fence line, and a low farmhouse sits half sunk in shadow at the horizon. The paint surface reads thick in places, thin and scrubbed elsewhere, giving the frost its crusted texture. A quiet corner for a study or reading nook, where the hush of a Hungarian winter can settle into the room.
