Winter Landscape in Kalwaria

Snow-covered fields rise toward the calvary hill above Kalwaria, the chapel domes punctuating the white like ink marks on paper. Wojciech Weiss rendered this winter landscape with the cool violets and smoky blues of Young Poland color. Bare trees cross the middle ground in thin, nervous strokes, their dark trunks catching slanting light. The sky carries weight, layered in gray-ochre cloud above a road that winds uphill toward the shrines. Frost sits on the furrows; the palette stays hushed, all pewter, umber, and pale rose. A quiet presence for a study or reading nook, where its muted winter light rewards long looking.
