Winter Landscape

Snow lies thick across the valley floor in Winter Landscape, Ernest Lawson at his most textured. Drifts of white pigment sit heavy on the surface, catching violet shadow where the light falls low. Bare trees cross the slope in charcoal strokes, their branches knotted against a sky of pale gray and cold blue. Lawson built his American Impressionist surfaces in loaded, layered paint, and here the crust of the snow reads almost geological. Muted lavenders and slate blues deepen the hollows while warm hints flicker along a distant ridge. A quiet study or reading nook suits its hush, where muted winter color rewards close looking.
