Winter landscape

Snow rules the whole view, yet nothing in it reads as plain white. In Winter landscape, Cuno Amiet works the snowfield with lilac, cobalt and pale rose until the cold seems lit from inside. Dark trunks cut verticals through the drifts, their branches a few loaded strokes of blackened umber. Shadows pool violet between the furrows. The oil paint sits thick in places, dragged thin in others, while a weak sun leaves ochre along the horizon. Hang it where quiet matters: a study that catches morning light, a hallway that needs depth, a reading nook that wants the hush of open country in January.
