Winter Forest

Snow bears down on a stand of dark firs, branches bowed under white weight while slender trunks cut pale lines through the gloom. Konstantin Yuon gives us Winter Forest at its most hushed. Cold blues and smoky greys pool between the trees, broken by drifts of cream where light lands on untouched snow. The brushwork stays loose and quick, texture built in short strokes that mimic frost on bark. Depth comes from layered planes of woodland receding into a soft, dim distance, a Russian landscape painted with an impressionist hand. It suits a quiet study or a reading nook, anywhere winter can be kept close without the chill.
