Winter

Snow lies thick along a frozen river, cut by channels of open water that mirror a pale sky. Ernest Lawson named the scene Winter and built it in heavy ridges of paint. A palette knife dragged the whites over slate and violet underpaint, so every drift carries ridges you can read from across the room. Bare elms stand as dark crosshatch. Low rooftops in ochre and brick red hold one thin thread of smoke. It belongs where quiet carries weight: a study with deep shelves, an entryway that meets cold mornings, a hallway lit low in the late afternoon.
