Winter End

Snow lies thick across a frozen field, and the last pale light of a December afternoon settles over it. Constantin Artachino titled the scene Winter End. Bare branches cross the upper edge in thin, dark strokes, their silhouettes sharp against a sky washed in grey and cold rose. Beneath them, drifts of white pigment sit heavily on the ground plane, worked with broken touches of violet shadow and a muddy umber path cutting through the snow toward the horizon. The paint reads as oil, laid on in short, loaded strokes that catch the light unevenly across the surface. A study or reading nook with cool northern light suits it well, where the hush of the frozen field can hold the room quiet.
