Winter

Snow lies thick over rooftops and bare gardens in this woodcut vision of a northern city at rest. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva built the scene from angular strokes, each cut line reading as wind-scoured white and cold shadow. Her woodcut technique shows clearly in the grain running through the drifts, where uncut wood leaves pale texture against dense black boughs. Rooftops tilt under heavy snowload, chimneys cast short violet shadows, and a frozen canal cuts a hard diagonal through the composition. The palette is almost entirely ink and paper, letting the crosshatching carry every tonal shift. It suits a study or reading nook, somewhere quiet and inward, where the stillness of a snowbound street can settle over the room.
