Willows on the Volkhov

Gnarled old trees lean from a muddy bank, trailing branches straight into the north Russian river. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted that meeting of wood and water at close range. He titled it Willows on the Volkhov. Sage and olive foliage breaks into short loaded brushstrokes, silvered grey where light skims the leaves. The current runs slate beneath a pale sky, reflections shivering as the flow quickens. Far shore growth stays soft and blurred, leaving every knot and fork to the foreground trunks. Made for a study, a stairwell, or a quiet reading nook, it carries the damp green hush of an early morning indoors.
