Willows, Banks of the Oise

Willows crowd the near bank, their trunks leaning at tired angles over water the color of pewter. Gustave Loiseau painted the Oise at its most workaday, and this riverside scene keeps every knot and split limb honest. Brushwork carries it. Short, loaded strokes build the foliage in moss green and olive, laid thick enough to catch light the way bark does. The current moves in long horizontal pulls of grey blue, and a strip of pale sky breaks through the canopy at upper right. Grass along the bank goes down in ochre and sap green, dragged, not blended. It belongs somewhere quiet and lived in, a reading nook with worn leather, a hallway that ends at a window, a study desk facing away from the screen.
