Wieczór, Wilejka — Canvas

The last sun drops below the river at Wilejka, and the whole surface of the water turns to molten copper. Ferdynand Ruszczyc painted this hour with a loaded brush, thick strokes of amber and rose stacked against a sky already cooling to violet and slate. The water carries every color at once: burnt orange near the horizon, deep bruised plum in the shadowed bend, a single pale reflection where the far bank catches the fading light. The riverbank sits heavy and dark in the foreground, earthy browns and umbers laid on so densely they seem to hold the warmth of the day. Above it all the sky opens wide, its clouds streaked with gold at their edges and grey violet at their cores, the kind of dusk that arrives in minutes and leaves just as fast. A study, a quiet hallway, or a room where the light fades in the evening would suit this river at daybreak of night.
