White Roses

White roses crowd a glass vase in this still life by Stefan Luchian, their petals opened loose and heavy, some heads already bowing over the rim. Luchian paints the blooms in thick, creamy impasto, whites pulled toward ivory, pearl, and the faintest green where light passes through the petals. The stems tangle below the waterline, visible through glass that catches the room in a few quick grey strokes. Against a muted ground the flowers carry all the color the picture needs. A natural fit for a dining room or a quiet bedroom corner, where the soft whites read calm from across the space and reward a closer look.
