White Night. Sergievo

Twilight refuses to deepen in White Night. Sergievo, where Konstantin Somov catches the exact hour when a northern summer night never quite turns dark over the fields. Pearl and lilac washes fill the sky, thinning to greenish silver at the horizon. Slender birches stand in soft silhouette against the glow, a darker mass of trees anchors one edge, and the meadow below keeps a damp, cool light of its own. A hushed scene for a bedroom or reading nook, where lamplight, linen and long quiet evenings answer the stillness held in that pale northern sky.
