A river stretches pale as milk under a sky that refuses to darken. White Night. Night dawn belongs to the series of northern night scenes that made Arkady Rylov the painter of the Russian midnight sun, where dusk and dawn blur into one long breath of light. The water carries a low sun in a smear of apricot and rose, while far banks sit cool in grey and violet, their trees reduced to soft dark silhouettes. Thin cloud bands streak the luminous sky in peach and pearl. A bedroom or north-lit reading corner suits this hushed northern glow.
