White Horsemen

Two riders in white sweep across a snowfield, their horses reduced to a few assured strokes of pale pigment against cold ground. White Horsemen belongs to the mountain studies of Nicholas Roerich, painter of the Himalayas and Central Asia. Look closely and the composition opens up: milk-white horse bodies, crimson accents at saddle and bridle, a horizon line of blue-violet peaks dissolving into mist. Roerich worked in tempera, building matte, chalky layers that hold light the way snow does, without glare. Every contour is simplified to its essential gesture. Suits a study or hallway where cool tones and quiet motion set the tone.
