Western Himalayas

Ridge after ridge of blue mountains recede toward a pale horizon in Western Himalayas by Nicholas Roerich. The farthest peaks dissolve into mist; the near ones hold their snow in solid, carved planes of tempera color. Roerich builds the slopes from layered washes of cobalt, violet and slate, each band cooler than the last. Thin snowfields lie flat and unshaded, while the shadowed ravines run almost indigo. The sky above stays luminous and thin, a single cool tone pressed right to the ridgeline. A quiet study or high-windowed hallway suits this mountain silence well.
