West Front of Blenheim Palace

The west front of Blenheim Palace fills the view, its long honey-colored facade laid out under a pale English sky. Winston Churchill painted his birthplace here, returning to the monumental architecture he knew from childhood. Van Dyck brown and muted olive carry the massed stonework, while quick brushwork sorts out the colonnade, the corner towers, and the lawn sweeping toward the terrace. Cloud shadow drifts across the upper storeys, softening every cornice.
