About this work

Wenden. Ruins of Chapel

Broken chapel walls rise from a grassy rise at Wenden, the medieval castle town in old Livonia that Nicholas Roerich painted on his Baltic travels. Tumbled masonry and a lone arch carry the weight of centuries. Greys and cool greens dominate the surface, the stones rendered in firm, blocky strokes while sky washes pale above the ruin. Soft shadows pool along the collapsed vault, and thin grass threads through the fallen rubble at the base. Every brushmark keeps the structure legible, so the eye reads arch, jamb, and crumbled course in one sweep. A quiet study or hallway suits it well, anywhere the silhouette of old stonework against northern sky can hold its own.
