Way to Tibet

A caravan thread winds across high ground toward Tibet, and Nicholas Roerich sets the whole journey against a wall of cold Himalayan blue. Way to Tibet reads as a single slow ascent. Tempera color carries the scene: lapis-hued summits pressed hard against the sky, snowfields painted almost white with a violet shadow beneath, and small dark figures of travelers and pack animals dropping single file down a slope of dry ochre scree. Roerich flattens the space deliberately, panorama stacked above panorama, so the eye climbs rather than wanders. Every ridge line is drawn clean, every plane of rock left matte and still. A study or reading room with northern light suits it, anywhere the horizon sits high and the mind follows the road upward.
