Waves

White foam breaks over dark rocks, and the sea behind it turns a deep blue-green that only Scottish light can produce. Waves is Samuel Peploe at his most direct, the water built up in thick, confident strokes of cobalt and viridian. Look closely and the paint itself does the work: short, loaded brushmarks stack the crests, while calmer passages of slate and pale turquoise carry the swell toward the horizon. The spray stays wet and loose, almost sketched, against firmer masses beneath. A north-facing room or a stairway landing suits this seascape, where cool color and salt air can carry the whole wall.
