Waterfront

Moored boats tilt against the muddy bank, hulls dark with wet silt. Waterfront shows Istvan Nagy at his most grounded, painting the working edge of a Hungarian river town. Broad, loaded brushstrokes lay down ochre, slate and moss green in quick diagonal passes. Figures bend over their catch near the waterline while reflections wobble and break in the current. Smoke drifts from a chimney behind the sheds. Reeds crowd the foreground, brittle and pale. It belongs in a study that faces morning light, or an entryway with stone flags, where the earthy palette sits against bare plaster.
