Waterfall

White water drops between ink-black boulders, splitting into threads as it falls. Kanō Motonobu built this waterfall from graded washes, leaving blank ground where spray would hang. Sumi ink saturates the paper in places and thins to pale grey elsewhere, the vocabulary of Japanese ink landscape painting. Dry-brush strokes roughen the cliff faces. Pines lean from crevices, needles stippled in dark clusters, while the untouched sheet becomes sky and mist. A quiet corner suits it: a tea room alcove, a study hung above low shelving, anywhere the eye can follow falling water without hurry.
