Waterfall at Saint Martin Pontoise

White water drops over a low weir in Pontoise, and Gustave Loiseau catches the churn with quick flecks of cream and pale blue. The cascade reads almost as texture, paint dragged and dabbed until it foams. Banks of the small river hold the scene together. Willow trunks run in grey-green verticals, their reflections breaking where the current quickens. Roofs of Saint Martin appear above the trees, muted terracotta and slate set down in small, confident strokes. Loiseau worked en plein air along the Oise, and his Post-Impressionist handling shows in the staccato brushwork across every surface. Light here is cool and even, a northern French day with no hard shadows. Suited to a hallway or a quiet reading corner where the movement of water carries the eye.
