Watchtower in Novgorod

A watchtower keeps its ground above Novgorod, painted by Nicholas Roerich with the stillness of early Russian fortification work. The artifact carries the title Watchtower in Novgorod. Timber galleries wrap the tower under a steep tent roof, and a plank stair climbs toward the sentry walk. Roerich lays out the earthen ramparts in cool grey-greens, the sky pressing down in a pale, milky blue. Small figures below give the rampart its scale. The muted northern palette settles naturally into a study or reading nook, wherever quiet architecture and open skies belong together.
