Wasteland on Vasilievsky Island

Empty ground stretches across Vasilievsky Island in this view by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. The wasteland title says it plainly, and the drawing agrees: vacancy given a place and a name. Low sky presses down on scattered timber lots and shabby outbuildings. Dobuzhinsky works in thin, nervous line and wash, greys bleeding into smoke, a telegraph pole or fence post standing in for company. Every mark registers neglect with affection. A study or writing room suits its hushed, urban melancholy best, where the eye can wander the vacant lots at leisure.
