Washington Bridge, Harlem River

The steel arch of the Washington Bridge rises across the Harlem River, its latticework silhouette set against a heavy sky. Ernest Lawson gives the span his signature weight, paint laid on in buttery ridges. Below, the water breaks into choppy strokes of teal, olive, and cold slate blue, catching reflected fragments of the bridge. Smokestacks and tenement rooftops crowd the far bank, painted in smudged ochre and brick red. The brushwork stays thick and tactile throughout, closer to relief than flat image.
