Wappen Pirckheimer

A heraldic shield stands at the center of the composition, its quartered field cut with crisp lines and crowned by a knightly helm with flowing mantling. This is the Wappen Pirckheimer, the coat of arms Albrecht Durer designed for his friend and patron Willibald Pirckheimer. Durer engraves the armorial details with dense hatching: the helm turns in three-quarter view, the mantling curls into leafy scrollwork, and the crest rises above the shield in confident contour. Ink on paper gives the whole design a tonal depth, darks built up stroke by stroke, lights left as bare paper. Every line does structural work. A study, library, or hallway with books and dark wood suits its graphic gravity.
