Walls and Towers of Soldai

Stone fortifications climb the ridge of Soldai, curtain walls threading from gate to keep under a pale southern sky. Konstantin Bogaevsky renders the Crimean fortress as pure geometry, each tower a dark cylinder against washes of sea haze. Pale violet and grey washes dominate, the masonry picked out in dry, precise strokes that catch shadow on every arrow slit and cornice. Cypresses and rooftops scatter at the base of the ramparts, small and warm against the cold mass above. The painting breathes that peculiar coastal clarity where limestone walls seem carved from light itself. A study, a hallway with tall windows, or a reading nook facing east would hold its quiet grandeur well.
