Swans glide through curling waves, their necks bent into the long arcs of Jugendstil line. A wallpaper design by Otto Eckmann, made to flow unbroken from skirting to cornice. Flat tints of sage and cream sit inside clean dark outlines, each bird reading clearly from across a room. Reeds and narrow leaves thread between them, every stem a single confident stroke of the pen. No shading, no perspective; the rhythm of the repeat does all the work. It belongs where the ornament can breathe: a stairwell, an entryway, or above a sideboard in a dining room leaning toward early twentieth century craft.
