Waiting

A lone figure stands at the edge of a mountain village, still as the stones around her. Waiting is one of Nicholas Roerich Russian symbolist scenes of human patience set against vast terrain. Tempera tonality in ochre, umber and slate gives the dwelling and rocky path a hushed, hand worn texture, while the figure holds the center with only a few restrained strokes. Distant ridgelines cool toward pale blue, the palette Roerich favored in his high altitude compositions. Everything above the rooftops stays open and light. Suits a hallway, reading nook, or quiet corner of a study where subdued earth tones and a contemplative subject belong.
