Vyas Kund

A mountain lake lies cradled in rock, still as glass and painted in bands of deep blue. This is Vyas Kund by Nicholas Roerich, the sacred pool above Badrinath rendered in his unmistakable tempera language. Steep slopes rise on either side in ochre and slate, their ridgelines cut clean against a pale Himalayan sky. The water itself carries the weight of the picture, its cobalt surface broken only by a thin shore of pale stone. Roerich flattens the forms into near-geometric planes, letting color do the work of depth and distance. A quiet presence for a study or reading room, where the cool blues reward a long look.
