Volkhov

The great river Volkhov carries the eye downstream, its surface folded in bands of grey and deep blue-green beneath a low northern sky. Nicholas Roerich painted this stretch of water with the calm he gave almost nothing else. Look closely and the brushwork does the work: short horizontal strokes pile pigment into moving water, while the far bank sits as a thin strip of muted ochre and umber. The sky holds most of the canvas, layered in cool silver and pale violet, letting the river read as a dark seam between light and land. A quiet study, a hallway, or a reading nook with northern light suits it well. It rewards long looking.
