Vitebsk. The Staircase

A stone staircase climbs through a Vitebsk courtyard, drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky in his grainy ink and wash manner. Steps narrow as they rise toward a doorway swallowed in shadow. Hatched lines build the worn treads and leaning balustrade, while diluted gray washes pool in the corners of enclosing walls. A lone figure at the landing reads small against the architecture, and muted ochre seeps through the paper grain. The composition tilts gently, the way old towns actually lean. It belongs in a study or hallway, beside a reading chair, where its hushed provincial mood can settle over a room.
