Vitebsk

Low rooftops of Vitebsk crowd a hillside above the Dvina, drawn in the sure, thin ink line Dobuzhinsky used for the old towns he knew best. Chimneys lean. Fences zigzag downhill toward the water. Orthodox onion domes rise behind the rooftops, crossed against a pale sky, while hatched shading builds the weight of timber walls and sagging eaves. Every gable and fencepost gets its own line, the whole town held together by tonal washes of grey and warm umber. A work for a hallway or reading nook, where its quiet provincial rhythm rewards a slow look. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky drew Vitebsk the way a native remembers it, from the high bank looking down.
