Vitebsk. Circus

A striped circus tent rises over the low rooftops of Vitebsk, its canvas bands pulling tight against a pale northern sky. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky sets the spectacle inside a provincial town that seems half asleep. Below the tent, narrow streets wind between gabled houses, chimneys and crooked telegraph poles drawn in fine nervous line. Washes of grey, dusty ochre and muted rose sit over the drawing, and small figures drift toward the entrance where banners flap. The old town presses close, as if the crowd, the houses and the ring all share one tight square of ground. It belongs in a hallway or stairwell, where a view of a small city gearing up for a show rewards every pass.
